Músico, compositor y vocalista de Deep Purple durante el período 1973-1976 y, posteriormente, llegó a formar su propia banda: Whitesnake, con la cual logró gran éxito. Su sonido Hard rock con influencias del blues británico se hizo popular en los ochenta con éxitos como "Still of the Night", "Bad Boys", "Is This Love?", "Here I Go Again", "Crying in the Rain" y "Fool For Your Loving", junto a la banda Whitesnake.
